Lutsk, Regional capital in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine
Lutsk is a regional capital on the Styr River in northwestern Ukraine, spreading across both banks. Bridges link residential neighborhoods with industrial areas, while parks run along the waterfront.
The town served as center of a major principality until 1238, before coming under Lithuanian control. In the 14th century, a Lithuanian prince built a large fortress that still shapes the cityscape today.
The name comes from a Slavic word meaning bend, referring to the river that curves through town. Locals often call the old quarter simply Old Town, where people walk between market halls and small squares.
Most landmarks sit close together in the old center, so visitors can reach many on foot. Street signs are often bilingual, which helps with orientation.
A local plant has produced vehicles designed for unpaved roads for decades. This production reflects the rural surroundings of the region, where asphalt is not everywhere.
