State Archive of the Volhynia Region, State archive repository in Lutsk, Ukraine.
The State Archive of the Volhynia Region is a document center in Lutsk spread across two buildings on Veteraniv and Hlushets streets. The collection holds centuries of government records, private papers, charters, and personal documents that researchers can access in dedicated reading rooms.
The institution was founded in December 1939 as the Volyn Oblast Historical Archive to collect regional records from the early 20th century onward. The Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1944 caused significant loss of documents that had been gathered until then.
The archive holds church records and marriage documents going back to the 16th century that show how people lived and connected to one another in this region. Walking through these papers, visitors can trace family stories, land ownership, and the bonds that held communities together across generations.
Visitors need to register in advance to use the reading rooms and access the holdings. Staff members are available to help guide people through the collections and locate what they are looking for.
The collection also includes films and audio recordings that document regional events, including firsthand accounts of the Holodomor and political developments in the area. These audiovisual materials allow visitors to experience history through the voices and images of people who lived through these events.
