Saint George's Cathedral

Saint George's Cathedral is a Rococo and Baroque church on a hill above the old town of Lviv. Two slender bell towers flank the pale limestone facade, while a golden dome rises over the central section, decorated with sculptures.

A wooden house of worship from the late 13th century stood on this hill before the present building was begun in the mid-18th century. Construction lasted about 16 years, and later restorations added further decorative detail.

The church on Saint George's Hill combines Byzantine liturgy with elements of Roman tradition, carrying Cyrillic script alongside Latin inscriptions on its walls. Visitors often hear polyphonic chant during services, which draw on old Eastern European melodies.

The entrance lies at the top of a long paved stairway rising from the square, and the climb offers wide views over the city center. Interior spaces remain open to visitors during daytime hours, with services taking place in the morning and evening.

The crypt beneath the main altar holds the graves of several archbishops and preserves old relics in glass shrines. Visitors can also view handwritten liturgical books from the Middle Ages kept in side chambers.
