Milove, Urban-type settlement in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine
Milove is a small town in eastern Ukraine situated directly on the Russian border, where the separation between two countries is physically visible. It has simple buildings, quiet streets, and is defined by official border crossing points where officials check documents while residents and visitors move back and forth.
During Soviet times, the border here was open and people moved freely between both sides with shared connections and friendships. Today new controls have emerged and stricter border restrictions have been implemented, fundamentally changing the open relations of the past.
The main street is called Friendship of the Peoples Street and runs along the border with the Russian town of Chertkovo on the other side. Residents from both sides see each other regularly and cross to shop or visit, showing how daily life continues across the political division.
The town is easy to explore on foot since most buildings and crossing points are relatively close together. Visitors should carry valid documents and be aware that regular patrols by border officials monitor the area, as some crossing activity occurs outside official checkpoints.
About a year ago a Ukrainian border guard office was attacked and damaged, after which military presence in the area increased significantly. Despite these tensions, residents focus mainly on economic challenges like job scarcity and harsh winters rather than political conflicts.
