Izium, Regional administrative center in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Izium is a settlement on the bank of the Donets River in Kharkiv Oblast that serves as a transport hub between the Kharkiv region and Donbas. The town area extends across both riverbanks and connects several districts through bridges and roads.
The site emerged in 1681 as a fortress built by the Kharkiv Sloboda Cossack Regiment to protect frontier areas. In 1765 the settlement officially received city status under the tsarist empire.
The name derives from the Slavic word for raisins, pointing to vineyards from past centuries. Today residents maintain small parks and green spaces along the riverbank that serve as meeting points.
Railway station and bus terminal provide connections to Kharkiv along a route covering about 193 kilometers. Travelers should check current access conditions before visiting, as some areas may have restrictions.
After liberation in September 2022, international investigators discovered burial sites that drew attention to wartime consequences. Documentation of these findings attracted observers from several countries.
