Ascension Cathedral is an Orthodox stone church in Izium, Ukraine, with white walls and golden domes, standing on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River. It follows the traditional forms of Ukrainian Orthodox architecture and is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city.
The cathedral was built in 1826 to replace an older wooden church on the riverbank that had fallen into disrepair over time. It gradually became the main place of worship for Orthodox Christians across the Kharkiv region.
The cathedral houses a venerated icon of the Mother of God of Peschany, which draws pilgrims from across the region. This icon is considered a protector of the area and remains a living part of religious practice in Izium today.
The church is located on Moskovska Street and can be reached on foot from the center of Izium. Visiting in the morning is a good idea, as services tend to take place early and the building feels more active at that time.
Right beside the cathedral, a natural spring called Kirichenkova Krynica flows on the grounds, and local people believe its water has healing properties. Many visitors take the time to draw water from it during their visit to the site.
