Building of Realschule in Izium, Educational heritage monument in Izium, Ukraine
The Realschule building in Izium is a two-story structure from the late 19th century with symmetrical facades and ornate window frames. The masonry displays typical features of Central European school architecture from that period, with clearly defined corners and regularly spaced window openings.
Built in 1882, the structure initially served as a women's gymnasium before being converted into a Realschule. This change reflected educational reforms being carried out in the region during the late Imperial period.
The building reflects late 19th-century teaching ideals through its solid, functional design meant for practical education. The spacious corridors and large classrooms show how the institution prioritized hands-on learning methods.
The building stands at Pokrovskaya Street 34 and is visible from the street. Note that it is currently used by a medical facility, so interior visits may be restricted.
The building sustained damage during the 2022 war but retained its structural integrity and stands as a testimony to the city's resilience. Current restoration efforts aim to preserve the original architecture while maintaining its capacity to serve medical needs.
