Simeiz Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Yalta Municipality, Ukraine.
Simeiz Observatory is an astronomical research facility located on Mount Koshka near Yalta at approximately 360 meters elevation. The station houses several telescopes and specialized instruments designed for observing celestial objects and distant galaxies.
The observatory was founded in 1908 by Russian astronomer Nikolai Maltsov, beginning with a refractor tower and dome for a Zeiss double astrograph. Over time, the facility expanded into a major center for celestial research in the region.
The facility maintains regular programs connecting professional astronomers with students through educational sessions about space exploration and astronomical phenomena.
Access to the facility involves a mountain location with steep paths requiring good fitness for the climb. The best visiting period falls during summer months when weather is more stable and stargazing benefits from fewer cloud cover interruptions.
The station has contributed to discovering about 150 minor planets and maintains extensive archives of sky objects from decades of observation. These catalogs remain valuable for astronomers studying the movement and characteristics of these bodies.
