Pervomaiske, Urban settlement in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Pervomaiske is an urban-type settlement in Mykolaiv Oblast, in southern Ukraine. It consists of residential streets, a few public buildings, and is surrounded by farmland typical of the region.
The settlement was founded and named during the Soviet era, taking its name from May 1st, one of the most celebrated holidays in the communist calendar. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the local economy, which had relied heavily on collective farming, went through deep changes.
The name Pervomaiske comes from the Russian word for May 1st, International Workers' Day, a holiday that held great importance during the Soviet period. Today, signs of that era are still visible in the layout and architecture of the settlement.
The settlement is best reached by car, as public transport connections in this part of southern Ukraine are limited. Before any visit, it is important to check the current security situation, as the region has been affected by armed conflict since 2022.
Ukraine passed laws starting in 2015 requiring the removal of Soviet-era names from public places, and Pervomaiske was among the settlements flagged for renaming. Several places sharing the same name across the country have already been officially renamed under this process.
