Tarass Shevtchenko Tomb, Memorial tomb on Chernecha Hill, Kaniv, Ukraine
The Tarass Shevchenko Tomb is a bronze monument on a granite pedestal atop Chernecha Hill in Kaniv, overlooking the Dnipro River and the surrounding countryside. The complex includes the burial site, a museum area, and a wide staircase that climbs from the riverbank.
After his death in Saint Petersburg, the body was brought to Kaniv and buried on the hill according to his final wishes. The first wooden marker was later replaced by a cast iron monument and eventually the current bronze statue.
The site honors the Ukrainian poet and painter whose writings became central to the nation's identity. Visitors see handwritten manuscripts and paintings in the museum that show his role as an artist and advocate for the Ukrainian language.
The climb takes you up a long stairway with 342 steps or more comfortably by elevator installed in recent years. Once at the top, walking around the monument lets you enjoy the wide views over the river and forests.
The original burial marker was a simple wooden cross erected by villagers soon after the funeral. It took more than two decades before a more permanent cast iron monument followed, and the current bronze figure took its place later.
