Kaniv Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine
Kaniv Nature Reserve covers 2027 hectares along the Dnipro River, protecting wooded hills, floodplain islands, and deep ravines near the town of Kaniv. The area brings together different habitats, from wetland meadows to old forests, creating shelter for many rare plants and animals.
The reserve was founded on 30 July 1923 to protect the river landscape and its biological diversity. Archaeologists later uncovered Scythian settlement traces and remains of the old Rus town of Roden within its boundaries.
The territory borders Taras Hill, where poet Taras Shevchenko is buried, a site many Ukrainians see as a touchstone of literary heritage. Visitors walking through the reserve can sense how closely natural landscape and national memory are woven together here.
Visitors should book guided tours in advance by calling +380473632991 and stay on marked paths throughout their visit. Protection rules require everyone to avoid entering natural habitats beyond the designated routes.
The territory is home to roughly 13,000 species of plants, fungi, and animals, including 150 that appear in the Ukrainian Red Book of endangered species. This remarkable diversity makes every walk a chance to spot rare life forms in their natural setting.
