Pokrov, Mining city in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine
Pokrov is a town in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast that spreads across several square kilometers with residential neighborhoods and industrial zones side by side. The settlement grew here because of manganese ore deposits in the area, which remain economically important to this day.
The town was founded in 1886 following the discovery of manganese ore deposits by engineer Valerian Domger. In 2016, it received its current name Pokrov, marking a change from its previous Soviet-era designation.
The city holds connections to ancient Scythian history through the discovery of a golden pectoral artifact at nearby Tovsta Mohyla in 1971.
The town is connected by bus services to larger Ukrainian cities and sits several hundred kilometers from Kyiv and Odessa. Visitors should note that industrial areas define the character of the place and the climate is typically continental.
Near Tovsta Mohyla, an ancient golden chest ornament from Scythian times was discovered in 1971, showing the historical depth of the region. This archaeological find connects the area to a much older past that existed long before industrialization.
