Monument to the founders of Odesa, Bronze monument in Catherine Square, Odesa, Ukraine
This bronze sculpture shows five figures from the late 18th century associated with the founding of this Ukrainian port city. The central female figure stands raised, while four men are arranged on lower tiers around her.
The original appeared at the start of the 20th century and vanished from the cityscape after 1917. The current version was installed roughly a century later to restore the lost representation.
The name recalls those who established the seaport and gave the city its present form. Visitors see the figures on a multi-tiered plinth that reflects the hierarchy of authority at that time.
The square sits centrally and can be reached on foot or by public lines. Visitors can view the figures from all sides and explore the surrounding district.
After years of debate, the city decided in 2022 under public pressure to move the sculpture to a museum. More than 25,000 signatures accompanied the decision to remove the work from public space.
