Vorontsov Palace, Imperial palace in Odesa, Ukraine
Vorontsov Palace is an imperial building from the Russian Empire period in Odesa, Ukraine. The colonnade frames a courtyard, while stone lions flank the entrance and decorated friezes embellish the upper floors.
Franz Boffo designed the building, constructed between 1826 and 1834, as Odesa rapidly became an important Black Sea port. The palace later served as the official seat of several governors who shaped the city's development during the 19th century.
The Russian name of the building refers to the governor-general who lived there and shaped the city for many years. Visitors can view the exterior and see the columned facades that remain a landmark of the coastal district today.
The building stands at 1 Prymorsky Boulevard, just a short walk from the central part of the city. The colonnades offer a wide view of the coast, especially in clear weather from the surrounding square.
During the siege in 1854, the Anglo-French fleet aimed its guns at the building's elevated location. Cannonballs struck the upper floors, and some of the impacts remained visible in the walls until later renovations concealed them.
