Руська брама

Ruska Brama is a medieval gate complex in Kamianets-Podilskyi that stretches roughly 230 meters along a deep canyon with eight towers joined by defensive walls. The structure includes ancient locks that managed water flow in the canyon, effectively surrounding the city like an island.

Construction started in the 15th century and continued into the 1530s and 1540s as a crucial defense for the city. This extended building period reflects the ongoing military threats the settlement faced over generations.

The name reflects a significant moment when Russian forces attempted to breach the city's defenses. Walking through its passages, you can sense how local people depended on these stone walls for protection and security.

The entire complex with its towers and walls is open for visitors to walk through at their own pace. You get the best views by following the paths along the canyon to see all levels of the fortification system.

The gate's water system could raise river levels around the city to create a moat-like barrier, turning the settlement into a water-surrounded fortress. This engineering approach was remarkably advanced for its time and rarely seen in medieval fortifications.
