Kamianets-Podilskyi, Medieval fortress city in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine
Kamianets-Podilskyi is a city in western Ukraine in Khmelnytskyi Oblast and sits on a limestone peninsula within a deep river loop. The fortress and historical quarters cluster along steep slopes above the water and form a compact old town core with defensive towers and churches.
The settlement developed from the Middle Ages as a border fortress between rival kingdoms and changed hands several times. After a brief Ottoman occupation in the late 17th century it returned to Polish and later Russian control.
The name comes from the Slavic word for stone and refers to the rocky outcrop above the river valley. Today locals walk through the old town along the city walls and enjoy views of the river bend below the old towers.
The lanes in the old town are steep and sometimes uneven, so solid footwear makes walking around much easier. A walk along the walls and up to the castle takes several hours and is most rewarding in clear weather with good visibility.
A bridge arch connects the old town with the opposite bank and spans the valley at considerable height above the river. This 20th-century structure replaced older crossings and offers a wide view of the entire peninsula from outside.
