Syrets arboretum, Protected botanical garden in Kyiv, Ukraine
Syrets Arboretum is a botanical garden in the Syrets district of Kyiv, covering around 7 hectares with organized collections of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants. The grounds are laid out along a network of walking paths that lead through clearly separated plant groupings.
The site grew out of a demonstration park attached to a flower farm founded in the late 19th century, with some plantings going back to 1875. Over time the collection expanded and eventually received protected status from the Ukrainian state.
Labeled signs placed throughout the grounds help visitors identify trees and shrubs as they walk from one section to another. School groups and plant lovers often come here to spend time among species that are rarely seen in ordinary city parks.
The garden is on Volodymyra Salskoho Street and is open to visitors during daylight hours. Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea, as some of the paths between plant sections can be uneven.
The collection includes decorative varieties of thuja that are rarely found in other green spaces across Ukraine. Some of these specimens date back to the garden's earliest decades, making them among the oldest living plants on the site.
