Chornobaivka, Administrative village in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine
Chornobaivka is a village in southern Kherson Oblast, located roughly ten kilometers northwest of the regional capital. The settlement spreads across flat steppe terrain near the Black Sea and serves as the administrative hub for its surrounding rural community.
Cossack Petro Chornobai founded this settlement in 1782 after receiving land from Russian Empress Catherine II. The establishment followed the dissolution of the Zaporozhian Sich and the colonization of southern Ukrainian territories.
The settlement takes its name from an 18th-century Cossack, a legacy that still shapes local identity. Ukrainian prevails in daily life, from shop signs to conversations between neighbors on the street.
The village sits close to the main road linking Kherson with the airport, making access and orientation straightforward. Flat terrain allows for easy walking, though summer heat across the steppe can be intense.
A nearby airstrip became the site of repeated military clashes during recent fighting. The frequent events there brought the village name into international awareness.
