Ochakov gate

Ochakov Gate is a stone structure with fortification elements that was part of the former Kherson fortress complex. It features characteristic defensive details such as reinforced arched passages and wall embrasures that identify it as a military entrance construction.

The gate was built in the late 18th century as the main entrance to the Kherson Fortress when the region underwent intense military reorganization. It witnessed various shifts in power and conflicts that shaped southern Ukraine.

The gate takes its name from the city of Ochakov, which played an important role in the fortress planning. Visitors can see today how the structure reflects the military connection between Kherson and this strategic location.

The gate is located near Perekopska Street and is easily reached on foot from the city center. Visitors should plan to explore the surrounding area carefully since the structure is integrated into the historic city layout.

The gate still preserves parts of the original masonry that offers insight into the building techniques of that era. Archaeologists have found traces of repairs and modifications here that show how the structure adapted to changing military needs.
