Chornokozyntsi Castle, Medieval fortress in Chornokozyntsi, Ukraine.
Chornokozyntsi Castle is a medieval fortress on a high hill marked by two round towers overlooking the left bank of the Zbruch River. The ruins also display remains of an 18th-century two-story episcopal palace with underground casemates beneath the southwestern tower.
The fortress was founded in the 14th century by the Koriatovych princes and served long as a defensive structure for the region. Over centuries it underwent many rebuildings and damage from various conflicts and power changes.
The chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary near the ruins reflects the religious importance this location held for local communities across centuries. Visitors can still see the foundations and remains that speak to the spiritual use of the site.
Daytime visits work best when you can explore the two towers and surrounding hillside. Access can be difficult in bad weather since the site sits on elevated ground where the earth becomes slippery.
In the underground casemates of the episcopal palace you can still spot traces of different historical periods today. These hidden chambers reveal how residents of different eras had to use and shape their living space.
