The Hryhoriy Skovoroda monument in Kontraktova Square is a bronze figure depicting the philosopher in everyday clothing, holding a travel bag pressed against his chest. The statue stands in front of the Hostynnyi Dvir building and serves as a landmark for visitors exploring the Podil neighborhood.
The monument was created by sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze and architect Vasyl Hnezdylov, inaugurated on March 1, 1977. It honors the philosopher who became known in the 18th century as a wanderer and spiritual thinker.
The monument faces the historical Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, where Skovoroda studied and taught as a prominent educator. Visitors come here to reflect on his influence as a thinker and spiritual guide.
The location is easily walkable and free to visit, making it a convenient meeting point for exploring the neighborhood. The monument is visible from multiple angles, allowing visitors to photograph it from different perspectives.
Each autumn, university students wash the monument to polish it and celebrate academic achievements. During graduation ceremonies, graduates place caps on the statue, turning it into a visible celebration of completing studies.
