Zvirynets caves

Zvirynets caves form an underground monastic complex with passages and chambers hewn into limestone cliffs overlooking the Dnieper River. The site contains multiple levels of interconnected rooms with rough stone walls and narrow corridors designed for monastic life.

The caves were established around the mid-11th century as a monastic refuge where monks pursued religious scholarship. Over centuries, the chambers were expanded and continuously inhabited by successive generations of religious communities.

The caves served as a spiritual retreat where monks lived in solitude, leaving behind visible traces of their daily religious practices on the walls and chambers.

Wear sturdy footwear since the pathways are uneven and damp, and expect cool temperatures below ground. Plan extra time to navigate the narrow passages carefully and bring a light source for better visibility inside the chambers.

Many original inscriptions and carved markings left by monks across generations remain visible and tell stories of daily life. These handmade marks offer a rare glimpse into the personal thoughts and practices of those who inhabited the caves.
