Afghanistan War Memorial, Military monument in Pechersk district, Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Afghanistan War Memorial is a monument in Kyiv dedicated to Ukrainian soldiers who served during the Soviet-Afghan War. It features bronze sculptures and stone panels engraved with the names of those who died, set on a hillside path between the Pechersk Lavra and the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.
The memorial was unveiled in 1994, a few years after Ukrainian independence, to honor soldiers who had served in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. It was one of the first public monuments of independent Ukraine dedicated to this conflict.
The memorial serves as a gathering point for veterans and families who come here on anniversaries and national days of remembrance. The presence of flowers, photographs and personal objects left at the base of the sculptures shows how deeply connected many people still feel to this place.
The memorial sits along a paved path between two well-known sites and is easy to reach on foot from either direction. The surface can be uneven in places, so comfortable footwear makes the visit easier.
Among the inscriptions, visitors can find the names of soldiers from many different regions of present-day Ukraine, reflecting how widely spread the participation in the war was across the country. This makes the memorial a personal place of memory for people coming from very different parts of Ukraine.
