Zhovtneve Reservoir, reservoir in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine
Zhovtneve Reservoir is a large water body near Mykolaiv in Ukraine, originally built in 1957 to supply water to the city and surrounding industrial facilities. The area was surrounded by grass and trees, with open space for recreation, fishing, and boating along its shores.
The reservoir was built in 1957 to store water and manage flooding for Mykolaiv, supplied by the Dnieper and Inhulets rivers. From 2006 onward, silt buildup degraded water quality, leading authorities to drain the reservoir, which dried up completely by 2016.
The reservoir served as a familiar gathering place for Mykolaiv residents over many decades, where people fished, boated, and spent summer days with their families. Its role in daily life extended beyond practicality, offering locals a natural escape near the city where they could relax and connect with the landscape.
The site is easily accessible by road and walking paths from nearby residential areas. Visitors should know that the reservoir is currently dry and can be explored on foot, though access conditions may vary depending on weather and seasonal changes in the landscape.
Although currently dry, the reservoir is the subject of restoration plans with cost estimates around 300 million hryvnias and support from international partners such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. These ongoing discussions reveal its lasting importance to the city's water security and future planning.
