Jinja is a city in eastern Uganda that stretches along the northern shore of Lake Victoria near the Nile River. It contains industrial zones and commercial districts with various neighborhoods of different sizes and functions.
The city was founded during British administration in 1907 and later developed into a planned center. An architect shaped the city layout in 1948, establishing the framework seen today.
The name comes from local terms meaning 'the stones,' reflecting the area's natural features. Multiple ethnic communities live here, shaping everyday life and local traditions.
The city sits on the Kampala-Jinja Highway with regular transport connections to the capital city to the west. Visitors should prepare for varying road conditions and plan travel times with some flexibility.
One of the country's largest sugar factories operates here and employs thousands of residents. This facility has long been a major economic driver for the entire region.
