Jinja, Eastern municipality in Jinja District, Uganda.

Jinja extends along the northern shore of Lake Victoria near the Nile River, featuring industrial zones and commercial districts at 1143 meters elevation.

The British administration established Jinja in 1907, developing it into a planned urban center with architect Ernst May designing the city layout in 1948.

The municipality derives its name from local terms meaning 'the stones' and serves as a meeting point for multiple ethnic communities of eastern Uganda.

Travelers reach Jinja through the Kampala-Jinja Highway, with regular transport services connecting to the capital city located 81 kilometers to the west.

The Kakira Sugar Works facility in Jinja operates as one of Uganda's largest sugar manufacturing plants, employing thousands of local residents.
