Alexandra Stadium, football stadium
Alexandra Stadium, also known as Mornflake Stadium, is a football ground in Crewe that has been home to Crewe Alexandra Football Club since 1906. The venue features a large main stand completed in 1999 on one side, while the other sides house smaller stands, with a total capacity of just over 10,000 spectators.
Crewe Alexandra Football Club was founded in 1877 and initially played at Alexandra Recreation Ground before moving to the current stadium in 1906 after a railway line reached the old ground. The stadium was rebuilt following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 to meet modern safety standards, with the main stand completed in 1999.
The stadium's name reflects Crewe Alexandra's origins, founded in 1887 and evolving into a team known as The Railwaymen due to their connection to the railway industry. The ground is often called Gresty Road by locals, a name that shows how the place ties to the town's railway heritage and traditional football culture.
The stadium is only five minutes walk from Crewe Railway Station, making it very easy to reach by public transport. There is a car park on-site with about 560 spaces, and several bus routes run through the town center, with the M6 motorway also nearby for drivers.
The stadium was originally built in simple form but was completely reshaped after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 to become a modern all-seater venue. Today the club plans a two-tiered rebuild of the Whitby Morrison Stand and even explores ideas like solar farms in the car park to help with finances.
