Waterloo & City line, Rapid transit railway line in central London, England.
The Waterloo & City line is an underground railway route in central London connecting Waterloo Station with Bank Station. The tunnel runs about two kilometers beneath the Thames and the busy streets above, offering no intermediate stops.
The line was opened in 1898 by the London and South Western Railway as the second electric underground railway in London. It originally served to carry commuters from the south directly into the financial district.
The line earned the nickname 'The Drain' among London residents and serves primarily business professionals traveling between Waterloo Station and the financial district.
Trains run only on weekdays, starting around six in the morning and ending after midnight. Travelers on weekends should use one of the other Tube lines between these two stations.
The route is the shortest of all London Underground lines and stays entirely below ground with no open-air sections. It also has the smallest fleet with only a few trains that shuttle back and forth all day.
