Amaravati Buddhist Monastery

Amaravati Buddhist Monastery is a Buddhist vihara located in the eastern Chiltern Hills near the village of Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. The site consists of converted school buildings surrounded by green spaces that provide areas for meditation, retreat activities, and daily practice.

The site was established in 1984 when the English Sangha Trust purchased a former school building from local authorities and converted it into a Buddhist monastery. A new temple was later constructed and significantly expanded the facilities available for religious practice.

The monastery welcomes people from many backgrounds who come to practice meditation and study Buddhist teachings in a supportive environment. The daily routines and ceremonies here shape how the place feels and give visitors a sense of how this tradition is lived today.
