Aston University, Public university in central Birmingham, England
Aston University is a public higher education institution in central Birmingham, spreading across roughly 24 hectares near Gosta Green. The campus brings together teaching buildings, sports facilities, and a library holding an extensive collection under open sky and green spaces.
The roots of the institution reach back to 1895, when it started as a municipal technical school serving the industrial city. In April 1966, Queen Elizabeth II granted the royal charter, formally elevating it to full university status.
The name refers to Aston Manor, a historic district that once stood as a separate settlement before becoming part of the growing city. Students from more than a hundred nations walk the same paths and share lecture halls, creating a daily mix of languages and perspectives.
Most courses include a year-long work placement woven directly into the program, giving students hands-on experience before they graduate. Visitors can reach the campus on foot from the city center and find public areas open during daytime hours.
The main building ranks among the largest brick structures in Europe and draws attention with its distinctive red facade. The structure was erected at a time when brick stood as a modern material for major projects.
