University of Chicago, Research university in Hyde Park, Chicago, US.

The University of Chicago is a research university in Hyde Park featuring Gothic stone buildings, laboratories, and lecture halls spread across roughly 217 acres (88 hectares). The campus sits about seven miles (11 kilometers) south of downtown near the shore of Lake Michigan.

John D. Rockefeller and the American Baptist Education Society founded this institution in 1890 after an earlier institution closed four years before. Within a few decades, it grew into a center for research in physics and social sciences.

Students move between Gothic buildings and modern research centers in small groups, often debating late into the library hours. In courtyards and on lawns, you regularly encounter seminar groups working or discussing outdoors.

Visitors can walk through open areas of the campus and explore Gothic architecture along with publicly accessible art installations. Most pathways are flat and easy to navigate, suitable for an afternoon stroll.

A sculpture by Henry Moore stands on the grounds, and nearby is the site where the first controlled nuclear chain reaction took place. This marker now sits beneath a lawn near the former athletic field.
