Oak Ridge Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Harvard, Massachusetts, US.
Oak Ridge Observatory is an astronomical facility in Harvard, Massachusetts, equipped with one of the largest optical telescopes east of Texas. The site housed a 61-inch reflector telescope for celestial observations and a steerable 84-foot radio antenna for research.
The facility was established in 1933 and operated by the Center for Astrophysics until primary operations ended in 2005. During this span, it evolved into a major center for observational research.
The facility was central to long-term studies of minor planets and asteroids, making it a hub for Solar System research. This work shaped how scientists understand small celestial objects.
The site is located near Harvard in the hills of the region and can be reached via local roads in the area. Visitors should be aware that the facility no longer operates fully today and access may be limited.
A major undertaking at the site was participation in Project BETA, a systematic program searching for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence. This work made it a pioneer in the search for intelligent life beyond Earth.
