Green-Wood Cemetery, Rural cemetery in Brooklyn, United States.
The 478-acre Green-Wood Cemetery features rolling hills, ponds, and Battle Hill, the highest elevation point in Brooklyn at 216 feet above sea level.
Founded in 1838, architect David Bates Douglass designed this cemetery during a period when city churchyards reached capacity, leading to the rural cemetery movement.
The cemetery contains monuments and mausoleums of 600,000 individuals, including artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, politicians William M. Tweed, and publisher Horace Greeley.
Visitors enter through the main entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street, with guided tours available to explore the grounds and learn about notable residents.
Four natural glacial kettle ponds dot the cemetery grounds, creating distinct environmental zones that support local wildlife populations.
