Cannon Falls, city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States
Cannon Falls is a small town on the Cannon River in Goodhue County, situated between St. Paul and Rochester with a quiet downtown core of historic buildings. The town sits east of Highway 52 and is marked by its river setting, nearby parks, and surrounding fields, while preserving roughly thirty buildings built between 1880 and 1915 that appear on the National Register of Historic Places.
Explorers Richard and William Freeborn discovered the waterfall in 1853 and later settled the land, leading to the town's official founding in 1854. The community's significance grew through Colonel William Colvill, who led Minnesota troops during the Civil War, and whose monument was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in 1928.
The name Cannon Falls comes from a translation mix-up: French fur traders called the river "Riviere aux Canots" (River of Canoes), but outsiders heard it as "Cannon." Today, the nearby Vasa Museum celebrates the Swedish settlers who arrived in the 1800s and shaped the community's identity, making that immigrant heritage a visible part of local life.
The town is easy to explore on foot and sits conveniently near highways connecting to nearby cities. Visitors find small inns and restaurants in the downtown area, with kayaking, hiking, and biking trails along the river available for different activity levels.
The 1888 museum building was once a fire hall and stands as one of the oldest surviving fire halls in the United States. It houses stories of two major fires that reshaped the town's appearance and preserved memories from the era when flour milling was central to the local economy.
