Upper West Side, Residential neighborhood in Manhattan, US.
The Upper West Side stretches between Central Park and the Hudson River from West 59th Street to West 110th Street in Manhattan. Residential buildings from the early 20th century line tree-shaded boulevards, while shops, restaurants, and cultural institutions concentrate along the Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue corridors.
The area transformed from the rural Bloomingdale District of farms and country estates into a residential neighborhood after the Ninth Avenue elevated railway opened in 1879. Over the following decades, multistory apartment buildings and courtyard complexes rose along the main thoroughfares.
The Lincoln Center presents classical music, opera, theater, and ballet performances in three venues on Columbus Avenue, where audiences from across the city gather for evening shows. Along the streets near Broadway, residents meet in cafes and bookstores that have been part of daily life here for decades.
Multiple subway lines stop at stations along Broadway, Central Park West, and Columbus Circle, connecting the neighborhood to downtown Manhattan and other boroughs. Pedestrians reach most destinations within a few blocks, as shops and services spread evenly across the area.
Riverside Park contains over 2800 steps of public riverside paths that wind between trees and lawns along the Hudson River. From these paths, visitors see the wooded cliffs of New Jersey on the opposite shore.
