East Huntington Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Huntington, West Virginia.
The East Huntington Bridge is a cable-stayed road bridge crossing the Ohio River between West Virginia and Ohio. The structure is supported by 31 pairs of steel cables anchored to a single concrete tower.
The bridge opened in August 1985 and was the first concrete cable-stayed bridge built in West Virginia. Its construction represented a significant engineering achievement for the region at that time.
The bridge was renamed in 2006 to honor Frank Gatski, a local Marshall University graduate and Pro Football Hall of Fame member. This dedication connects the structure to regional sports heritage and local pride.
The bridge connects West Virginia Route 106 with Ohio Route 775 and carries two lanes of vehicle traffic. The crossing is designed for vehicles, and pedestrians should be aware of the active road conditions.
The concrete tower features an inverted Y shape, a distinctive design rarely seen in American bridges. This shape allows one leg to contain an elevator while the other incorporates a maintenance ladder.
