Foxboro Stadium, NFL stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts
Foxboro Stadium was a multi-purpose venue in Foxborough, Massachusetts, featuring a horseshoe-shaped arrangement of concrete stands with metal benches. The facility accommodated more than sixty thousand spectators and stood as a notable structure from the early seventies.
The structure opened in mid-August 1971 and served as home to the New England Patriots for over thirty-one seasons. The facility closed in early 2002 and was demolished shortly afterward to make way for a new stadium.
Football fans and concertgoers flocked to this venue over three decades, experiencing not only Patriots games but also major international sporting events. The name derives from the town of Foxborough, whose residents often referred to the stadium simply as the home of their team.
Access was provided via nearby highways, and large parking areas allowed thousands of visitors to leave their vehicles. During major events, longer waiting times could occur at entry and exit points.
The final NFL game at this location occurred during a heavy snowstorm in January 2002 and became known in sports history as the Tuck Rule Game. This encounter marked the farewell to an era and turned into one of the most debated games ever played.
