Barren County encompasses 500 square miles of land with rolling hills, open fields, and the Barren River Lake in the southern region.
The county was established in December 1796 from sections of Warren and Green Counties, taking its name from meadowlands covering its northern third.
The area maintains strong Scottish influences, reflected in the name of its county seat Glasgow and through various community events throughout the year.
The county functions as a regional medical and retail center through Glasgow, while maintaining strong agricultural production and educational facilities.
