Canton, County seat in Stark County, Ohio, United States
Canton is a city in northeastern Ohio that serves as the administrative center for Stark County and sits roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Cleveland. The city covers flat to gently rolling terrain and connects to surrounding regions through Interstate 77.
The city was founded in 1805 and gained incorporation in 1838 after establishing itself as a trading hub. Railroad connections and the steel industry fueled growth during the 19th century, making Canton an important manufacturing center in Ohio.
Canton is known as the birthplace of the National Football League and home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which draws thousands of visitors each year. The city displays its connection to American football through museums, events, and public art visible throughout downtown.
The downtown area is easy to explore on foot, with parking available near main attractions and public buildings. For longer distances within the city, regional bus connections serve residential and commercial districts.
William McKinley ran his 1896 presidential campaign from his front porch in Canton, addressing delegations that came to visit him there. The city now houses his tomb and a memorial library that recall his political career.
