Ridgewood Historic District, Historic district in Canton, United States
Ridgewood Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Canton extending east and west of Market Avenue North and covering roughly 20 blocks. The area preserves original brick streets, locally made street lights, and contains around 190 buildings featuring European architectural styles.
The neighborhood was developed between 1918 and 1940 by George A. Leonard and the Leonard Agency, with most major buildings constructed during the 1920s and 1930s. This period of growth reflected broader economic expansion happening in the region at that time.
The district reflects European architectural traditions brought to life by architects such as Charles Firestone, Herman Albrecht, and Louis Hoicowitz. These design choices shaped how residents experienced and inhabited their homes, creating a cohesive neighborhood character.
The neighborhood maintains its original layout with curved streets designed to minimize through traffic and original paved surfaces. Walking is the best way to see the architectural details and appreciate the street design.
Many windows feature beveled and leaded glass that catches light in distinctive ways throughout the day. Roofs are covered with slate in varied shapes and colors, complemented by hand-cut stone and patterned brick that make each building visually distinct.
