Raleigh County, County administration center in Beckley, West Virginia, US.
Raleigh County spans 609 square miles across southern West Virginia, featuring wooded hills and the New River along its eastern border.
The county formed from Fayette County in 1850 received its name from Sir Walter Raleigh and entered the Union with West Virginia in 1863.
The Catawba-speaking Moneton and Monacan people inhabited the region before European settlement altered the demographic composition of West Virginia.
The Raleigh County Commission conducts regular meetings at 215 Main Street in Beckley on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
The region experienced two major mining incidents: the 1914 Eccles Mine disaster with 180 casualties and the 2010 Upper Big Branch accident with 29 deaths.
