Hinton Historic District, Historic district in Hinton, West Virginia, US.
Hinton Historic District spans 80 acres with around 200 buildings in different styles including Classical Revival, Late Victorian, and American Four-Square forms. The structures line tree-shaded streets and demonstrate the range of building types that developed during the town's growth period.
The arrival of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway line in the late 1800s brought rapid growth and transformed Hinton into a commercial hub. Most of the buildings in the district were built in the decades following this railroad connection, creating the streetscape visitors see today.
The buildings here show where people gathered and learned together over the generations. The Carnegie Library, First Baptist Church, and YMCA building each served as community anchors, and visitors today can still sense their role in local life.
The district is walkable and allows visitors to explore the different buildings at their own pace. Stick to the main streets to see the range of architecture and find landmarks like the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, Summers County Library, and the Railway Passenger Station.
Many visitors overlook the preserved railroad water tank, a working reminder of how steam locomotives needed water during stops. Two veterans' memorials scattered through the district document military sacrifice from the community across different eras.
