Federal Prison Camp, Alderson, Federal women's prison in Alderson, West Virginia, US
The Federal Prison Camp Alderson is a women's correctional facility spread across 159 acres (64 hectares) in two counties in southern West Virginia. The buildings stand in a horseshoe layout, and barbed wire fencing was deliberately avoided.
The prison opened in 1928 as the Federal Industrial Institute for Women to provide a dedicated federal facility for female offenders. The concept later evolved toward rehabilitation, which led to the current camp structure.
The facility runs a dog training program where inmates prepare service animals for disabled veterans. This work gives the women a practical task during their sentences and creates a connection to society beyond the institution.
Visits for sightseeing are not possible here as it is an active correctional facility. The nearest towns offer lodging for families who wish to visit inmates.
The facility follows a boarding school model with fourteen residential cottages, unbarred windows, and no armed guards. This open design led observers to informally call it Camp Cupcake.
