Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, International airport in Milwaukee, United States
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is an international commercial airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The terminal with two concourses and 38 gates handles daily flights to cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The site opened in 1920 as Hamilton Airport and was purchased by Milwaukee County six years later. The current name honors General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of American military aviation who was born in Wisconsin.
A large art installation by Michele Oka Doner adorns the main hall with motifs from the Great Lakes and Wisconsin. The work features bronze elements embedded in the floor that resemble shore stones and aquatic plants, giving travelers a sense of the regional landscape.
Route 80 buses connect the terminal regularly with downtown Milwaukee. A free shuttle takes passengers to the Amtrak Hiawatha station south of the airport.
The Mitchell Gallery of Flight inside the terminal displays aviation history exhibits from Wisconsin. The small museum is located past security and documents regional aviation pioneers along with historical aircraft parts.
