Bay View Series, Public sculpture at Bay View Library, Milwaukee, United States.
The Bay View Series is an outdoor sculpture installation consisting of three granite blocks and a large taconite iron ore chunk. The stones are inscribed with native tree species names and are positioned at the corner of South Kinnickinnic Avenue and East Otjen Street next to the public library.
The sculpture group was created in 1993 by artist Peter Flanary and marked the start of public art initiatives in the neighborhood. It emerged during a period when the community sought new ways to express its identity through public artworks.
The installation carries the name of the neighborhood, which refers to the district's orientation toward the waterfront. The inscriptions on the stones display native tree species that reflect the area's natural heritage.
The installation sits directly beside the library's main entrance and is easily accessible on foot. The surroundings have good sidewalks and the area is attended during library operating hours.
The centerpiece is a six-ton taconite iron ore block with a carved central hole, permanently set in concrete. This opening references the region's mining heritage and adds a deeper layer of meaning to the artwork.
