Clinton, town in Indiana
Clinton is a city in southern Vermillion County, Indiana, situated along the Wabash River. It has parks, sports fields, restaurants, wineries, breweries, and a nine-hole golf course open to residents and visitors alike.
Clinton was founded in 1829 and named after DeWitt Clinton, who was then Governor of New York. Coal mining drew workers from Italy and Ireland starting in the mid-1800s, and their presence shaped the character of the town until mining declined in the following century.
The Little Italy neighborhood in the northwest of the city is marked by fountains brought over from Italy and Italian restaurants that still serve traditional recipes. Walking through this part of town, visitors can see how the families who settled here shaped the look and feel of the streets.
Clinton is easy to reach by car via State Road 63 and State Road 163, with U.S. Route 41 running nearby. The most crowded time of year is Labor Day Weekend, when the Little Italy Festival brings large crowds to the city, so planning ahead is advisable for that period.
The Coal Mining Museum in Clinton holds one of the few authentic gondolas found in the United States, a boat type normally associated with Venice. This unexpected object connects the Italian origins of the miners who once worked here with the industrial story of the town.
