AirTrain Newark, Airport rail link at Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey

AirTrain Newark is an automated rail system that connects airport terminals with parking facilities and regional train stations. The line stretches across roughly three kilometers and serves as the main link between different sections of the airport complex and the regional transit network.

The Port Authority began construction in 1991 and opened the system on May 31, 1996, after facing several technical delays during development. The project represented a major infrastructure investment for the airport at a cost of roughly 354 million dollars.

The rail system represents the advancement of airport infrastructure in the northeastern United States, connecting multiple transportation networks in the region.

The service runs from early morning until late evening each day, offering quick travel between terminal buildings. Trains depart at regular intervals throughout the day, keeping wait times short for passengers.

The system runs 18 automated trains that operate independently and announce arrivals and gate information as they travel. The driverless technology was a major engineering advancement for North American airport transport when first introduced.
