Mattoon

Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, situated at the intersection of major railway lines and extending across fertile farmland. The city contains residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and educational institutions that shape local life.

The city's founding traced back to William Mattoon's involvement in building the Terre Haute and Alton Railroad in 1853. This railroad construction attracted workers and enabled the settlement to develop into an important local hub.
