Northern Virginia lies south of Washington and includes several counties such as Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington and the city of Alexandria. The area ranges from suburbs with residential neighborhoods and shopping centers to more densely built districts that border the capital directly.
Several battles took place here during the Civil War, including the Battle of Manassas, which shaped the land and its towns. After World War II, the population grew sharply as many government agencies and companies settled near the capital.

You can reach this area through two large airports, Reagan National and Dulles International, and get around by Metro or Virginia Railway Express. Many places are close to train stations, but some neighborhoods are easier to reach by car.
This area is home to the headquarters of several federal agencies, including the CIA and the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. You see many people in suits and uniforms commuting daily between offices and train stations.
