Ox Hill Battlefield Park, Civil War battlefield park in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Ox Hill Battlefield Park is a small Civil War memorial site in Fairfax County, Virginia, featuring two granite monuments, informational plaques, and paved walking paths. The grounds sit within a residential neighborhood and are open to the public throughout the year.
On September 1, 1862, one of the final engagements of the Second Bull Run Campaign took place here, resulting in heavy losses on both sides. Two senior Union generals, Philip Kearny and Isaac Stevens, were killed during the fighting.
The two granite markers show the exact spots where two Union generals fell during the fighting, giving the site a very personal character. Visitors stand at the precise location where these men lost their lives, which makes the experience different from most battlefield visits.
The paved paths make it easy to walk through the whole site without any difficult terrain. Reading all the plaques takes more time than a quick pass through the park, so allow yourself enough time to take it all in.
The park sits in the middle of a modern suburban neighborhood, creating an unusual contrast between everyday life and one of the few preserved Civil War sites this close to a major city. Drivers passing on the surrounding streets have little indication of what lies just past the park entrance.
