Fort Leavenworth, Military installation and National Historic Landmark in Leavenworth County, Kansas.
Fort Leavenworth is an expansive military installation with training buildings, housing for soldiers and their families, and a maximum security prison for military offenders. The roads of the installation pass historic stone houses from the 19th century that stand alongside modern administrative buildings and training facilities.
The outpost began in 1827 as protection for traders and settlers traveling the Santa Fe route through the Kansas prairies. Later the installation became a training center for army officers and played a central role in the conflicts of the 19th century on the western frontier.
Officers from around the world study military leadership together here, exchanging their experiences in classrooms and on training grounds. The international composition of students shapes daily life on the post.
Visitors need valid identification and must explain their intentions at the entrance gate before gaining access to the installation. Some areas are accessible only during guided tours, which should be reserved in advance.
The fort houses a military prison that is among the few maximum security facilities of the U.S. armed forces and holds soldiers after serious offenses. The installation also contains a museum with uniforms and weapons from two centuries of American military history.
